Went on a mutual aid to a fire in neighboring town yesterday. Went to two alarms and we sent our 100' American lafrance ladder soon to be replaced by a new-to-us used 110 foot ladder accually from the town that the fire was in!! Here's the newer truck

if you tell me that your station is full time, im moving right now. I would love to run fire only, as long as theyre busy.

We are fire only, but sometimes have a medical assist truck logged on (if manpower permits). We are 100% volunteer, and including the calls yesterday, we are up to #15.

Me thinks you would be bored, LOL.

Wow that's it. Only 15 huh, that's a slow department! I Don't really have an Exact number but we've probably gotten about 60 ish calls so far. We are medical and fire. On a medical the police go in a few cruisers and we bring our squad. We get about 3-4 calls a day on a good day but mostly all medicals and alarm activations. Boring........lol

If we ran medical it would be much higher. How many FIRE calls have you had? Without the medical calls, what would the number be? I bet WAY lower than 60

If we ran with the ambulance to every medical call in our coverage area, we would be at around 180 calls for the year now. The ambulance company runs over 4000 calls a year.

    lets see...

Friday night, big snow storm started moving into the area. extra manpower was called to sleep at the station, bringing the total from 3 full timers at the station, and 2 on-call personnel at home, to 6 personnel at the station. had several ems calls and several fire calls, none of which i made. ems calls were before i got on, and the fire calls were after. our ems and fire are pretty much seperate. stayed all night friday night, no sleep, went home saturday for an hour and a half, dug out 1.5 feet of snow from the drive, to promtly go back into work, to standby again. stayed until 4pm when we were released. promtly got a fire call for an AFA, to the local college, went unfounded. then later saturday night, got a non-emergency CO alarm, also went unfounded after a walk through with the meter. slept all night saturday to catch up on sleep. sunday, had several ems runs in the morning before i got on-call. went on-call at 1pm, and had 1 call for chest pains, station crew handled, no calls since then.

i think our call totals are... i'm pretty sure were over 200 calls for fire and ems this year. i'll get back to ya'll on that.

The company I work for is dealing with a lot of nursing homes. Every time I get dispatched for an emergency and show up in a room at the nursing home to get a story on what's going on, here's "The great 5 answers from the nurses"

    1. I only work here every other week, I don't know this patient.
    2. This is not my regular patient, so I don't know what's going on.
    3. I have a critical patient in another room, if you excuse me.
    4. I just came back from vacation, just don't ask me questions.
    5. My shift was over 1 minute ago, I have to go.

    Feel free to add...

Last week was dispatched to Crisis center at local hospital for 302 ( court order against the patient for danger to self or others ) to be transported to nearby behavioral facility. Patient is 39 y/o F mother of 4. Bi-Polar, Suicidal. Loaded her in the rig and went enroute. I did take her restraints off, just to make her feel like a human and not criminal, she pulls out the bag w/belongings and there's her wallet. She opens it up and pulls out $300 and goes "let me go for $300, please".

we have several special care medical centers in our area, and one just lost its contract with a private ambo company, so were taking over for them. people will go in with chest pains and expect to get care, but they have to call us for them to go to the hospital. now, normally when you get a chest pains patient, you have to get your vitals, hook em up to the monitor, start a line, and get a history. they only do some of that. theyve given nitro without a line started, without BP's, and are using IV equipment that isnt compatible with ours or the hospitals. we go there expecting some good level of care to be done, but depending on who's working, you may or may not get some stuff done.
